The Restaurant Newton Corner Keeps Almost Getting

October 1, 2026

Walk down Centre Street past the old Hopsters space and you will still find brown paper taped inside the windows. Somewhere behind that paper is a 55-seat restaurant called CircleBack Kitchen & Bar, and depending on who you ask, it has been six weeks or ten months from opening for most of a year.

The state's roster of active Newton liquor licenses shows CircleBack's all-alcohol license was issued in November 2025. The restaurant's own announcement, made public in late October 2025, pointed to an early January 2026 debut. As of late August 2026, Fig City News reported the restaurant was still hiring staff and had not set a new date. That places the opening more than seven months past the original January target, a timeline that is common for a full restaurant build-out and one that keeps the storefront at 292 Centre Street a frequent topic along the block.

Who's actually behind it

The name behind CircleBack is Roger Zeghibe, a restaurateur with more than 35 years in the business who also runs Porttown Public House, Beantown Pub, and The Hub Pub in downtown Boston. The menu he's described to What Now Boston is a rotating, seasonally driven mix of elevated American comfort food with Brazilian and Mediterranean influences, built around a 12-seat bar pouring craft cocktails, mocktails, local beer, and wine. It's an all-day format, meaning it's meant to fill the storefront from breakfast through dinner rather than just at night.

That detail matters more in Newton Corner than it would somewhere else. Unlike Newton Centre, where a coffee shop, a movie theater, and a bookstore already anchor foot traffic, or Newton Highlands, where storefronts have turned over quickly, Newton Corner has spent years functioning mostly as a place people pass through on the way somewhere else. An all-day format, running from a morning coffee through an evening cocktail, gives a block a reason to be active at more hours than a dinner-only spot would, which makes this opening one to look forward to on Centre Street.

Here's the timeline as it stands:

Date What happened
Late October 2025 Zeghibe's plans for 292 Centre Street become public
November 2025 The state issues CircleBack's all-alcohol license
Early January 2026 Originally announced opening date
Late August 2026 Restaurant still hiring; no new date set

A license in hand and a storefront mid-renovation for the better part of a year is not unusual for a full build-out. What makes it notable here is what's happening on the same block while everyone waits.

The other side of the same problem

A few doors down, at 287 Centre Street, Thai Amarin closed in June 2026. Its closure took San Ryo Ka down with it, the Japanese kitchen that had been operating out of the same storefront. That's two restaurants gone from one small stretch of Centre Street in the same season CircleBack was supposed to be filling the space next door.

So the arithmetic on this block right now isn't "one new restaurant is coming." It's closer to "two closed, and the one meant to anchor the block hasn't opened yet." Fig City News' running directory of Newton restaurants counted at least 12 openings against nine closings citywide in 2026, which reads as a net gain if you're looking at Newton as a whole. Zoom into this particular corner and the ledger looks different: still waiting on the one opening that would tip it back toward positive.

Not everything on the block is on hold. A city newsletter from late July 2026 mentioned a stop-in at Bricks & Minifigs, a new Newton Corner shop specializing in pre-loved LEGO sets and new collections. It's a small business, and it's not going to reset anyone's dinner plans, but it's a real, current addition to a stretch of Centre Street that has otherwise been defined lately by what isn't there.

What the mayor's office says about it

Newton's mayor, Marc Laredo, was asked about the city's shifting restaurant scene for that same Fig City News piece and offered a line that applies as much to Newton Corner as anywhere else in the city:

"We're always welcoming something new while continuing to celebrate the places that have been part of our community for generations."

It's a fair description of the churn happening across Newton's villages this year. It's a harder sentence to sit with if you live near 292 Centre Street and the "something new" part hasn't shown up yet.

What this actually looks like on the ground right now

If you're walking Centre Street through Newton Corner this fall, here's what you'll find:

  • 292 Centre Street: CircleBack Kitchen & Bar, still in build-out, still hiring, no confirmed opening date as of late August 2026
  • 287 Centre Street: The former Thai Amarin and San Ryo Ka space, vacant since June 2026
  • A recent addition nearby: Bricks & Minifigs, the pre-loved LEGO shop noted in the city's own July newsletter

None of this is a story about Newton Corner failing. Restaurants take longer than announced far more often than they open on schedule, and a 55-seat all-day format with a full bar is a heavier lift than a quick-service storefront. But it does mean the block's identity this season is still genuinely undecided. Whether Centre Street reads as a corner you walk through or a corner you walk to depends almost entirely on whether one particular storefront finally turns its lights on.
